Varian is a resourceful and clever boy with an innate brilliance when it comes to Alchemy and invention. He is innovative in the way he looks at the world, and though the outcomes are not always favorable, he usually works for the cause of helping others. He is emotional, sometimes to an unstable degree, and tends to feel things with a raw kind of intensity that can lead him to make rash decisions. He is a brilliant strategist, good at getting into the heads of those on the other side to predict what they intend to do, sometimes seeming to be one step ahead, other times tripping up and making mistakes that could have been avoided with better planning.
In the aftermath of the things he's done and the things he feels have been done to him, Varian has become less willing to trust blindly, less likely to rely on the promises of others, convinced that he cannot put his faith in anyone but himself. He is a boy who has suffered greatly, and made terrible choices in the wake of that suffering. The longer he reflects of the events that are behind him, the more he starts to see how much of it was actually his fault, and not the fault of those around him. He's a genuine person beneath the hurt, and with the help of his friends, he is quickly learning to accept and cope with that.

Presumably born in Old Corona to Quirin and an unknown potentially now deceased mother, Varian has had a penchant for science since he was old enough to read. He spent most of his life studying and working diligently to improve the lives of the villagers, but more often then not caused disaster with his wild and often unsafe experiments.
He was around 14 when Rapunzel came to him for aid in discovering the secrets surrounding the reappearance of her titular hair, though those efforts didn't get them terribly far in the end, he became a sort of shaky friend to the princess and her own friends. When strange seemingly indestructible black rocks began taking over and causing turmoil in his village, Varian began a desperate scramble to find out why, and, find a solution. In the process he inadvertently trapped his father in what seemed like an amber substance, and upon being turned away by the princess in his hour of need, Varian vowed revenge on Rapunzel and everyone he felt so deeply wronged by.
His revenge came in the form of a battle, the kingdom of Corona against his small army of automatons, a battle that he ultimately lost. Despite promised from the king to treat him well, Varian would spent the next several years down in the dungeons of Corona, stewing in anger and remorse for his actions.
While in his cell, he struck up a shaky partnership with Andrew and his people, and Rapunzel returned to her kingdom under the control of the man and Varian, much more reluctant to be causing so much harm. Together with Rapunzel and her friends, Varian drove Andrew and his group out of Corona, and slowly but surely worked to earn the trust of his friends again.
After being rescued from the grip of his former friend, Cassandra, Varian began to notice the strange occurrences happening around the kingdom, and started his own investigations on the matter. As of right now, no one in Corona has seen Varian or Ruddiger, their whereabouts are effectively unknown.
